Foster FAQs

1. I've never fostered before, how do I get trained?

Rey of Hope Rescue has a training and mentoring program in addition to a community of supportive volunteers.  We value our fosters and strive to provide all necessary support.

2.  Who covers medical expenses?

Rey of Hope Rescue is responsible for expenses that provide your foster pet with vaccinations, flea and tick preventatives, heartworm preventatives, microchips, collars, leashes and other necessary and approved medical services, such as prescribed medication or spay & neuter surgery.

3. Who provides food, bedding, and other supplies?

  • We have food and supplies and will abundantly share them with you. Our donated inventory changes and fostering may mean taking on responsibility for these common items when stock is low.

  • If you are fostering a cat, you may be asked to provide litter, food, toys and similar items.

  • If you are fostering a dog, you may be asked to provide food, toys, treats and similar items.

4. Do I need a fenced-in yard to foster?

No you do not need a fenced-in yard to foster. You will be required to keep your foster secured with a leash at all times while outside.

5. Can I still foster if I work full time?

Absolutely you can foster if you work full-time.  It’s important to establish a consistent routine for walks, feeding and outside time.  Most dogs adjust well and prefer a home over a stressful shelter environment.  Some of our volunteers may also be available for drop-in care on longer days.

6. What if my foster pet gets sick?

Please contact us right away if you believe your foster is sick or injured.  Depending on the symptoms a care plan will be established.  We have approved vets and will work with you to schedule an appointment or direct you to appropriate emergency care.  Rey of Hope Rescue will cover all approved medical expenses.

7. I have other pets. Can I still foster?

Yes you can foster if you have pets depending on their temperament and how well they get along with other animals.  Any pets in the household must be up to date on vaccines depending on the species.

8. Will my foster pet be housebroken?

Each dog is different.  Although we try to gather as much information as possible before placement, often a dog will need time, patience and training to adjust to their new routine and schedule.  You should expect accidents with any new foster pet that enters your home.

9. How long will my foster pet be in my care?

The pet will be with you from arrival to adoption.  This could be as little as 2 weeks, but may be multiple months, depending on the pet. While we try to gather as much information on the pet before they arrive in your home, you are vital to helping us learn their personality to make the best forever match.

10. What happens if I need to travel or take a vacation while a foster pet is in my care?

Volunteers within the Rey of Hope community assist one another with providing  temporary care while you are away.

11. Do you offer a foster-to-adopt option?

No, we do not offer a foster-to-adopt option.  If you are interested in adopting, a foster will work with you to provide as much information as possible to allow you to make an educated decision prior to bringing your new pet home.
